September 2011

Dear Parents:

All three Mathews County Public Schools have achieved Full State Accreditation for the 10th straight year. Lee-Jackson Elementary School, our one Title I school has met the Federal Annual Yearly Progress goals as well.

Listed below are a few notes, programs and initiatives that will begin or continue for 2011-12:

  1. We welcome Mr. Albert Green as principal of Mathews High School.
  2. Our “Focus Areas” will guide us to improvements in personnel, instruction, communication and facilities.
  3. Our “Mathews Mark of Excellence” will be upgraded to improve our commitment to instruction.
  4. Our “Vertical Content Area Teams” will continue to revise curriculum.
  5. Our “Putting a Name to a Number” initiative will ensure that students needing help will get it.
  6. Our “Thrifty Spot” store has been a success and will remain open.
  7. Our first “STEM Summer Academy” was held in August. Based on enrollment, we will strive to hold another.
  8. We will continue to use the AlertNow and PowerSchool technology to better communicate with parents.
  9. To save trees, the Student Conduct Guidelines & Other Important Information Booklet will be available to you online at www.mathews.k12.va.us If you are unable to access the information, your child’s school can provide you with a printed copy.
  10. Finally, our division has received full accreditation status from AdvancED and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement.

Thank you for your continued support. It is a joy and a privilege to work with your children each and every day.

Sincerely,

David J. Holleran, Ed.D., Division Superintendent
